Main research field: Physics, chemistry Sub research field: Plasma chemistry
Job summary:
The Instituto Superior Técnico (Lisbon, Portugal), seeks applicants for 1
Research Grant (BI) within the project “Increasing the energy efficiency of
plasma conversion of methane”, PTDC/FIS-PLA/2135/2012, financed by national
funds through FCT/MCTES (PIDDAC). A MsC in any of the scientific areas above
mentioned is required.
Job description:
The project focuses on plasma conversion of methane for the production of
Syngas and other hydrocarbons and will focus on improving the energy
efficiency in non-thermal or warm plasma reactors, using a dielectric barrier
discharge (DBD) configuration at atmospheric pressure and mixtures of methane
with other gases in different proportions. The project will explore different
routes for this purpose, either to improve the conversion in the plasma or
exploring the synergy with novel catalysts to promote the formation of H2 and
CO.
The present position is mostly for experimental work required for (a) the
project and construction of a DBD reactor for high temperature studies; (b)
installation of a control system and equipment for electric, chemical and
plasma diagnostic; (c) study of the methane conversion and product
selectivity as a function of different parameters: gas temperature and
composition, power supply pulse, reactor configuration and type of catalyst,
and (d) Collaboration on the preparation of reports and publications.
The project involves a multidisciplinary team of physicists, chemists and
electric engineers.
Admission requirements:
Applicants should fulfill the following requirements: - A Masters degree in
physics engineering, chemist engineering or a closely related area.
Experience on laboratory work, project of experimental equipment,
measurements of electric parameters or gas chromatography are welcomed.
Legislation and regulations: Law No. 40/2004, from the 18th of August
(Research Grant Holder Statute); FCT Regulations for Advanced Training and
Qualification of Human Resources 2012 and IST-ID grant regulations.
Workplace: The work will be conducted at the Campus Tecnológico e Nuclear of
IST in Sacavém (in the outskirts of Lisbon) under the scientific supervision
of Dr. Nuno Pinhão. Grant duration: The grant will have a duration of 12
months, renewable until for one more year.
Monthly stipend: 980€, according to the table of values of the grants awarded
by FCT, I.P. (http://alfa.fct.mctes.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). Voluntary
Social Security (SSV) and accidents insurance are also provided.
Evaluation and selection: The selection of the applicants will be done taking
into account: academic curriculum (25%), Master thesis and experience (60%),
and experience in English (15%).
Selection jury: - Dr. Nuno R. Pinhão - Dr. Joaquim B. Branco - Prof Dr. Vasco
Guerra. Publication and notification of results: The results will be made
public through a final list ordered by candidate classification, available
for consultation at CTN/IST and sent to all candidates by electronically
signed email. Application period: Between the 18 February and 29th of March
2013.
Application: Applications should be sent via email to Nuno Pinhão
(npinhao AT ctn.ist.utl.pt)
and should, including: - Motivation letter - Full CV - Copy of degree
certificates – digital copy of the Master thesis - Copy of ID card or
passport
