"Structure and physicochemical properties of porous media:
from material sciences to hydrology and petrophysics"

The talk is about the structure and physicochemical properties
of different artificial and natural porous media.
There are numerous ways one can get some information about texture
of these materials, among which 2D cuts, e.g., think-sectioning,
is the most frequently used method. With the development of other
techniques like confocal microscopy and X-ray microtomography 3D
information about structure became available and can be utilized
for so-callled microscale/pore-scale modeling. Another approach
to obtain such 3D images is statistical reconstruction using 2D
cut(s) or some other structral datum (for example, grain size
distribution). In case a detailed 2D/3D information about sample
structure is provided numerous different technqiues can be utilized
to estimate or calculate directly its physicochemical properties
like air permeability (numerical: Navier-Stocks equation and its
simplifications solutions using FEM, FDM, etc., lattice-Boltzmann
method, pore-network models; statistical: correlation functions,
homogenization theory, rigorous bounds, etc.).
The presentation aims to review these methods briefly and to provide
numerous
example of their usage in petrophysics, soil science/hydrology, material
sciences
(oil reservoir rocks, soils, ceramics samples). Further insights for future
research and utilization are provided as conclusions for each thematic part.
