HED experiments for ICF, astrophysics, and material science

We have developed high energy density (HED) experiments on high energy,
high power, inertial confinement fusion (ICF) lasers over the past two
decades that span (1) the hydrodynamics and radiative dynamics of ICF
capsule physics; (2) the shock driven turbulence of exploding stars
(supernovae) and radiative dynamics of star formation processes; and (3)
the high pressure, ultrahigh strain rate, solid-state dynamics relevant to
novel concepts for ICF and hypervelocity impacts in space and on Earth.
These different regimes are separated by many orders of magnitude in
length, time, and temperature, yet there are common threads that run
through all of these phenomena. Examples from each of these three
seemingly very disparate regimes will be given, common themes found, and
the unique underlying science of each examined. We conclude by pointing
out promising directions for the future.
