"Exploring the Sky from the Depths of the Sea (Neutrino Astronomy with
ANTARES) /Marx memorial lecture/!"
Kivonatos ismertetes:
Classical astronomy which observes the sky with visible light has the bias to
see objects like the sun which emit in the visible wavelength range. In the
past century classical astronomy has been extended over the full spectrum of
electromagnetic radiation from radio waves to gamma rays and this new
multi-wavelength astronomy has discovered many previously unknown
astronomical
objects such as Active Galactic Nuclei and Gamma Ray Bursters. The idea of
neutrino astronomy is to extend further the possibilities to observe the
universe with other "messengers".
This new research field started twenty years ago with the BAIKAL and AMANDA
experiments, respectively in Siberia and in Antarctica. More recently the
ANTARES neutrino telescope has been built and operated in the Mediterranean
Sea. The first neutrino observations with ANTARES will be presented together
with some unique results on the deep sea environment made possible because of
the deep sea location of the apparatus.
