In this talk I will begin with a brief review on the black hole
thermodynamics, and then discuss a related problem when a dilaton
field is included --- vanishing of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. In
such situation, higher curvature contribution should be considered. I
will discuss how the Gauss-Bonnet correction can resolve the problem,
and in addition, introduce two interesting properties: (i) double
enhancement of entropy-area relation, and (ii) the existence of a
critical value of dilaton coupling.
