Science City Interdisciplinary Research Alliance (SCIRA)
The UK Government aspirations for UK research has led to an exciting new
large-scale initiative; encouraging an increase in internationally leading
research in the West Midlands that will drive a vibrant knowledge-led
economy and deliver new models of partnership with the industrial base. The
West Midlands Regional Development Agency, Advantage West Midlands (AWM), is
funding joint equipment and research infrastructure at the Universities of
Birmingham and Warwick to a likely value of Ł80M. To complement this
significant capital investment by AWM the partner universities of Birmingham
and Warwick have been successful in securing a significant financial award
(Ł9.6M) from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE)
Strategic Development Fund to establish the Science City Interdisciplinary
Alliance. The funding is being used to create the new role of Director of
the Interdisciplinary Alliance and up to 20 Interdisciplinary Research
Fellowships <http://www.science-city-jobs.com/jobs.shtml> . All positions
will be hosted by one of the two universities with an honorary appointment
at the other. The Research Fellowships are to work from the four themes of
the Science Cities Collaborative Package (SCCP) between the Universities of
Warwick and Birmingham; Advanced Materials, Energy Futures, Translational
Medicine and underpinning IT/computational work. Applications from
candidates with scientific computing expertise are welcome. Such candidates
should indicate how they could immerse themselves within one or more of the
Science City themes of Advanced Materials, Energy Futures and Translational
Medicine whilst retaining a distinct profile due to their scientific
computing activities. Full details may be found at
http://www.science-city-jobs.com/ and particularly
http://www.science-city-jobs.com/research-themes/it.shtml Deadline for
applications for the first round of appointments is November 6th, 2008.
