"The Virgo interferometer for gravitational wave detection"
Idöpont: 2008. szeptember 5. (péntek), de. 11 óra
Helyszín: KFKI RMKI III. épület 2. emeleti Tanácsterem
Abstract
Gravitational waves of astrophysical origin are expected to be detectable on
Earth in a frequency range between a few Hz and up to about 10 kHz. The Virgo
interferometer was designed since the beginning to be sensitive over the full
frequency range. The achieved performance will be illustrated. Since May 2008
Virgo and the LIGO-GEO interferometers operate jointly to achieve the
detection
of first events and to start gravitational wave astronomy. The detectors are
currently being upgraded to improve their sensitivity and will start in 2009
an
observation run of about two years. Current status of the Virgo detector and
perspectives for "Advanced Virgo" will be illustrated.
