Kedves Kollégák!

Ausztria orvosi orientációjú gyorsítót épít Bécsújhely közelében, amelyet fizikai kutatásokra és tesztnyalábnak is jól lehet majd használni. Terv készül erre a hasznosításra. Kérjük, aki részt kíván valamilyen formában venni a projektben, jelentkezzék Trócsányi Zoltánnál, a magyar ECFA-küldöttnél (Trocsanyi Zoltan <Zoltan.Trocsanyi AT cern.ch>).

Üdvözlettel: Horváth Dezső

Subject: Possible test beam facility in Austria

In eastern Austria, close to the town of Wiener Neustadt, the Austrian government has decided to build an accelerator facility for medical purposes. This accelerator called MedAustron will be constructed in cooperation with CERN. A contract between the government and the director general of CERN was signed in November 2007.

In the concept of this facility the possibility of non-clinical research with modified beam parameters is included. Together with colleagues I am preparing a strategic paper which describes the possible use of such an accelerator for physics research. Among other applications one subject for research could be the development and test of particle detectors. I do know from my own experience that test beam time is very limited at other laboratories.

The parameters of the beam for non-clinical research are:

Protons
Beam energy tuneable (min-max) 60-800 MeV
Beam intensity 1E10 protons per pulse
Extraction time (min-max) 50 ms - 5 s
Repetition rate (max) 1 Hz

Carbon Ions
Beam energy tuneable (min-max) 120-400 MeV/u
Beam intensity 4E8 ions per pulse
Extraction time (min-max) 50 ms - 5 s
Repetition rate (max) 1 Hz

I would like to ask you as a representative of a country in close distance to this facility if there is potential interest from your community to use such a beam if easy access is available.
Could you please inquire in your country and in case there are groups interested to help me establishing a contact?
I am trying to understand in which research fields interested groups work and what are their specific requirements.

Thank you and with best regards,

Manfred Krammer
