Abstract:
High Coulomb interaction probability for heavy ions traversing the solid
targets makes ion beam very useful probe for materials characterization.
Recent upgrades of accelerator facility in Zagreb made possible
application of two different ERDA (Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis)
systems that use heavy ion beams of MeV energy range. IEE system has been
developed for 3D analysis of hydrogen in nuclear microprobe chamber while
TOF system is used for depth profiling of other light elements with depth
resolution down to 5 nm. On the other side, a high interaction probability
makes heavy ion very useful tool for materials modification as well. In
the collaboration with ATOMKI we have developed technique of 3D
structuring of radiation defects in Si pin diodes. Some examples of
applications will be given. Recently we have also started study of
nanostructure formed by single ion tracks in several different materials.
Perspectives and future plans will be discussed.
