Abstract

Some nebulae, as the Red Rectangle, and some high latitude interstellar
clouds, appear to have a red color. This has been used to suggest the
existence, in the interstellar medium, of particles which would
fluoresce in the red the light they absorb in the UV. I will give the
reasons why I doubt these particles exist. In particular I will show
that extinction by our atmosphere can lead, in the blue, to spurious
effects on groundbased spectral observations of faint extended objects.
This talk is based on two papers published in 2003 on atmospheric
extinction, and on two newly accepted papers in which background night
sky, starlight scattered in the atmosphere, and nebular light, in
observations of nebulae, are estimated and separated.
