POST-DOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP

Growth of Semiconductor Nanostructures using PVD Techniques

A post-doctoral position will be available starting April 1, 2005 in
the
area of growth of semiconductor nanostructures by PVD techniques, within
the EC Research Programme: "Physics and Technology of Elemental, Alloy and
Compound Semiconductor Nanocrystals: Materials and Devices (SEMINANO)"
(http://www.physics.metu.edu/smd/seminano/). This programme is directed to
develop fundamental knowledge on the production techniques,
characterization, and possible applications of semiconductor nanocrystals
embedded in various matrices.
The postdoctoral researcher will be involved in sample growth using
PVD
techniques (mainly rf-sputtering) and in sample characterization by means
of structural and optical techniques. The goals of this work are: (i)
fabrication of semiconductor nanoparticles embedded in several matrices
using mainly the rf-magnetron sputtering and eventually pulsed laser
ablation, and the electrodes deposition using the thermal evaporation and
dc- and rf-sputtering techniques; (ii) analysis of correlation between
processing parameters and structural and optical properties; (iii) growth
of multilayer structures, e.g. sandwich structures with composite layer.
The research will require ability to work in an international team and good
communication and presentation skills.
The position is initially for one year and can be extended up to
August
2007, depending of the success achieved. Net salary will be 1495 euro/month
and Portuguese Social insurance of about 90 euro/month is covered. Travel
and visiting expenses related to the research activity will be covered by
research funds.
PhD and research experience in Condensed Matter Physics and Materials
Science are required. In particular, research experience in PVD techniques,
mainly dc- and rf-sputtering, and semiconductors research and technology
are essential. Applicants should have a good command of English.
The above research work will be mainly performed within the FMNC
group/Physics of Noncrystalline Materials group of CFUM
(http://www.fisica.uminho.pt/fmnc/).

The deadline for Call for Applications is March 18, 2005. The contact
person is Prof. Maria J.M. Gomes.
