Cim: "A comparative study of giant molecular clouds in the Local Group"

Kivonat:
Stars, the most fundamental ingredient of galaxies, are formed in
giant molecular clouds(=GMCs). It is therefore of vital importance
to elucidate star formation in GMCs in our continuing efforts to
understand evolution of galaxies. Until recently our knowledge on
resolved GMCs have been limited to the Milky Way. A resolved CO study
of the Large Magellanic Clouds by NANTEN, a 4m radio telescope in
Chile, revealed a first complete view of GMCs in a single galaxy
(Fukui, Y. et al. 1999). Subsequently, mm-wave interferometry was
used to make another complete view of GMCs in M33 (Engargiola,¡¡G. et
al. 2003). In addition to these, extensive efforts are being
continued to study GMCs in the Galactic warp, SMC etc.
Most importantly, these samples of resoloved GMCs have allowed us to study
star formation in the individual GMCs for the first time.

In this talk, I will make a comprehensive review of the properties
of GMCs obtained so far, and make a comparison among them with
a particular emphasis on star/cluster formation as a function
on metalicity and stellar gravity.
