VON NEUMANN CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE
Budapest, Hungary, October 15-20, 2003.

The conference is devoted to linear operators and the
mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics, the program
includes many topics: linear operators, in particular unbounded
and Schr=F6dinger operators and their role in mathematical
physics; stochastics aspects of quantum mechanics, for example
probability and statistics in the Hilbert space formalism, quantum
information theory and quantum entropy; algebras of operators,
von Neumann algebras and applications in quantum statistical
mechanics and in field theory; the logical approach to quantum
theory, quantum logics, non-commutative probability and quantum
structure.

The organizer of the conference is The Janos Bolyai Mathematical
Society with the cooperation with the Alfred Renyi Institute of
Mathematics. The advisory board consists of renowned scientists
such as: Huzihiro ARAKI (former director of the Research Institute
for Mathematical Sciences, Kyoto University), Arthur JAFFE
(Harvard University, Department of Physics), Peter D. LAX (former
Director of the Courant Institute), Walter THIRRING (honorary
president of ESI).

Among the main speakers :

Alain Connes (College de France)
Uffe Haagerup (Odense University)
Arthur Jaffe (Harvard University)
Richard Jozsa (Bristol University)
Elliott H. Lieb (Princeton University)
Peter D. Lax (Courant Institute)
Heide Narnhofer (University of Vienna)
Domokos Szasz (Budapest University of Technology and
Economics)
Mary Beth Ruskai (University of Massachusetts , Lowell)
Dan Voiculescu (University of California, Berkeley)
Mark Fannes (University of Leuven)
Luigi Accardi (University of Roma)
Viaceslav Belavkin (University of Notthingham)
Masanori Ohya (University of Tokyo)
Michael Schurmann (University of Greifswald)

Contributed papers are welcome. Those wishing to present a paper
at the conference should submit an extended abstract (preferably
in the form of LATEX file, one page, including references) to the
Organizing Committee; the abstract should also indicate whether
oral or poster communication is preferred. Deadline for
submission is March 31, 2003.

The first day of the meeting is organized jointly with the
Hungarian John von Neumann Computer Society and takes place
in the main building of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. The
conference will be opened by the president of the Hungarian
Republic and representatives of several professional societies will
be invited to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of John
von Neumann. The scientific program starts in the afternoon with a
few general talks. From the second day the mathematical program
continues in the Alfred Renyi Institute of Mathematics. A morning
and an afternoon session is planned for every day, their program is
arranged by the session organizers.

Rooms have been reserved in some conveniently located places for
the participants of the conference. You may find more details
about them on the Registration Form which should be sent back by
April 15. Choosing one of the * marked hotels, you should contact
directly with them as soon as possible. Rooms in non * marked
places should be ordered directly form the organizers.

The registration fee is US $ 120. The registration fee entitles the
participant to attend the conference and covers coffee and
refreshments during breaks. (Lodging and meals are not included
in the registration fee.) The deadline of the payment is September
5, 2003. (Further details of the way of payment will be sent later.)

Communications concerning the conference should be sent to the
electronic address
vonneumann AT math.bme.hu,
and to the Bolyai
Society's address
