INTERCALNET

European Union 5th Framework
Research Training Network (RTN)

The Development of Lithium Intercalation Materials and Techniques for
their Characterisation

This Network has been established to focus expertise in surface science
and electrochemistry on functional thin films, including those that are
optically active. Their use will be explored under conditions in which
air-sensitivity is of paramount importance, thus providing an improved
perspective on intelligent materials of nano-scale thickness based on
lithium ion batteries. To achieve this aim the Participants are able to
offer an exciting opportunity to five post-doctoral researchers.

The posts, each for a period of up to 36months, will be held in the
laboratories of the Participants, as listed below. Under the terms of
the RTN, the posts are open those under 35 years of age and who are
nationals of the member states of the EU or from the associated
countries. A further important requirement is that post holders must not
be nationals or recent residents of the country in which the post is
held. This announcement is made jointly by the Participants in order to
give the widest possible options for those wishing to apply for these
posts. Each post will be awarded to the successful applicant according
to the local conditions and salary scales of the university concerned.
In addition to the post-doctoral posts there is one pre-doctoral post, of
shorter duration, at La Sapienza with the same EU terms of tenure.

The Network Participants are:
University of Surrey (UK) Prof. James Castle, the Co-ordinator of the RTN
The development of electrochemical cells for insertion into the
load-locks of UHV analytical instrumentation: measurement of diffusion
profile, particularly after large numbers of intercalation cycles. For
further details, e-mail
j.castle AT surrey.ac.uk
Universita? di Basilicata (Italy) Pr. Anna Maria Salvi
Quantitative analysis of surface chemistry by XPS, particularly in
relating the stiochiometry and Auger parameter to the degree of
electrochemical intercalation. It has facilities for direct transfer
from a glove box to the XPS spectrometer. For further details, e-mail
salvi AT unibas.it
Universita? di Roma 1, La Sapienza (Italy) Prof. Franco Decker
The use of thin films as intercalation electrodes: study of their
physical and chemical properties: the study of the optical, mechanical
and electronic properties of the materials, along with their
electrochemical characterization. For further details, e-mail
franco.decker AT uniroma1.it
Technische Universitaet Darmstadt (Germany) Prof. Wolfram Jaegermann
Electrical measurements and XPS/UPS characterization of electronic
functional materials using novel, solid state, thin film batteries for
in situ studies of intercalation. Both laboratory based electron
spectrometry and synchrotron facilities are used in this work. For
further details, e-mail
jaegerw AT surface.tu-darmsdadt
ENSCP, Universite de Paris 6, Pierre and Marie Curie (France) Prof.
Philippe Marcus
Longstanding studies of the growth habit of passive layers by STM/AFM
will be related to work on the coarsening of nano-crystallites by
repeated intercalation cycling. Passive films on metals will be
investigated as intercalation hosts. For further details, e-mail
pmarcus AT ext.jussieu.fr

The closing date for application is March 31st 2003. Additional
information concerning eligibility can be found at
www.cordis.lu/improving/networks/young.htm. Please consult this before
making an application. Then send CV and covering letter to the chosen
network participant, as listed above.
