The dusty sight of galaxies:
FIR ISOPHOT and submm photometry of normal galaxies, ULIRGs and quasars
Abstract:
The FIR wavelength range is the realm of dust emission. The Infrared Space
Observatory (ISO) offered a wide range of observing capabilities to
characterize the properties of this solid state constituent of the ISM.
In particular the photometer ISOPHOT opened new wavelength windows and
faint flux ranges for extragalactic FIR astronomy.
With the ISOPHOT 170 micron Serendipity Sky Survey the cold dust component
in a large number of galaxies was quantified allowing the determination of
the gas-to-dust mass ratio.
With ISOPHOT multi-filter photometry and complementary submm observations
the most detailed 1 to 1000 micron spectral energy distribution templates
of ultra-luminous infrared galaxies were established. Analysis methods to
learn more about their deeply embedded energy sources and their evolution
are presented.
ISOPHOT multi-filter observations allowed for the first time the
determination
of the relative contributions by thermal and non-thermal radiation for
a statistically significant sample of quasars and provided clues for
the unified scheme.
