                 "Conflicts of Interest in Biomedical Research"

Kivonatos ismertetes:

Recent research scandals have galvanized international attention on issues
raised by conflicts of interest in basic and biomedical research. In the
United States, Awareness of the issues posed by conflicts of interest has
been raised by the media, universities, professional organizations, and the
federal government in the wake of the tragic and needless death of eighteen
year old Jessie Gelsinger in a gene transfer experiment at the University of
Pennsylvania. In this case, both the researcher and the university had a
large financial stake in the biotechnology company that provided the
adenovirus vector for the study. Since Gelsinger, the federal government and
several professional organizations have issued guidance documents on
financial relationships in research. Not every financial relationship poses a
conflict of interest, but when real conflicts arise, they must be managed or
eliminated to protect the integrity of the science all types of research, and
to safeguard human subjects in biomedical research.

Less attention has been given to nonfinancial conflicts of interest.
Professional prestige and advancement are strong motivators for most
scientists, perhaps more important than financial gain. Sometimes these
motivators lead to unethical behavior on the part of researchers. In her
talk, Mary Faith Marshall will discuss several cases of conflict of interest
in research (both financial and nonfinancial), will identify how and when
cheating and other forms of scientific misconduct occur, and will discuss
ways that mentors and institutional administrators can prevent and manage
conflicts of interest.
