TRENDS IN PHYSICS - BUDAPEST, AUGUST 26-30, 2002


FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT


INTRODUCTION

The 12th general conference of the European Physical Society, "Trends in
Physics" will be held in Budapest, Hungary, from Monday 26 to Friday 30 August
2002. The first meeting of the series in the new millennium will bring
together scientists and teachers from different fields of physics from Europe
and around the world.

The conference venue will be the Physics Building of the Eötvös University
located in South Buda, situated along the banks of the Danube river. Budapest,
the Hungarian capital offers a wide variety of touristic and cultural
attractions. Further information and accommodation booking forms will be
provided with the Second Announcement.

regularly. It will be used for online pre-registration, registration and
abstract submission.


SCIENTIFIC PROGRAMME

The programme of EPS-12 will follow the traditional scheme of the series
consisting of plenary talks, parallel symposia with invited presentations and
posters.

The successful tradition of the Young Physicists' Day will be continued. In
2002, there will be a common programme with the International Conference of
Physics Students that will be held at the same place from 21 to 27 August
2002. Details of the programme and a Call for Papers will be issued with the
Second Announcement in the autumn of 2001.



SOCIAL PROGRAMME

A programme of activities for accompanying persons will be offered, as well as
receptions, an excursion and other events for participants.


FEES & SUPPORT

It is envisaged that the registration fee for the five-day conference will be
260 EUROs for EPS members and members of National Societies of the EPS. The
students' registration fee will be 130 EUROs. Additional support in the form
of grants will be available for young participants.


CONFERENCE VENUE

After a careful comparison of various possibilities we have selected the
Physics Building of the Eotvos University as venue of EPS-12. Besides the
classrooms and major lecture halls, a theatre hall, a concert hall and an
exhibition hall can host meetings. The major lecture halls are equipped with
integrated audio-visual facilities including multimedia demonstrations and
Internet connection.

Four snack-bars can be found in the building and the canteens of the
University of Technology and Economics are within a convenient walking
distance.
