Biography of Agustin Chicarro:

Born on 23-07-56 in Madrid, Spain, where he graduated from
the French Secondary School. He studied geology, geophysics,
geochemistry, biology and astrophysics at various levels at the
University of Paris (Orsay) and obtained his Ph.D. in Tectonics
with a thesis on ‘Compressive Structures on Mars’ in 1983,
demonstrating the global occurrence of such deformations. He
developed research at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston
(USA) for three years on the geology of Mars, Venus, the Moon
and Mercury. After continuing research in Madrid at the Museum
of Natural Sciences and teaching at universities in Taiwan for three
more years, he joined the European Space Agency (ESA) in 1988,
working at its research center of ESTEC in the Netherlands on
proposals for future missions to Mars and the Moon. Since 1998,
he is the Project Scientist of the approved Mars Express mission,
his main task being to ensure that the scientific return of each
instrument will fulfil its objectives. His main scientific interest
include
planetary geology, and in particular tectonics and impact craters on
Mars, the Earth and other planets, as well as astrobiology.
He is the author of numerous ESA reports and scientific publications.
