The DataGrid Project

Robin Middleton

Abstract :
The concept of Grid-based computing has become popular over
the last few years, particularly in North America. Such ideas
have started to take hold in a very significant way in Europe
over the last year. This is exemplified by the new DataGrid project
which is the major project sponsored by the European Commission in
this area.

In 2005 a major new facility for high energy physics research
will come online at CERN in Geneva and will produce unprecedented
amounts of data. A major part of the DataGrid project is designed
to set the path to meet such challenges in managing and analysing
this data. Another key aspect of DataGrid is the newly forged links
with earth and bio-sciences in Grid computing.

The data challenges facing high energy physics will be presented,
and the match with emerging Grid technologies will be discussed. The
project workpackages will be reviewed and the current status addressed.
