Abstarct

The study of dusty plasmas is an emerging field that bridges the
traditionally separate subjects of celestial mechanics and plasma
physics. The motion of a charged dust grain can be very complex as it
responds to electromagnetic as well as gravitational forces. Furthermore
the surface charge on a dust grain can vary in time due to photoelectric
and magnetospheric charging currents. In this talk I shall describe recent
work on dust dynamics in planetary magnetispheres, particulary that of
Saturn.
Single particle motion is described by Hamiltonian
model which includes the electric field produced by Saturn's rotating
magnetic dipole field, as well as the oblateness of its gravitational field. A
complex network of potencial wells is discovered, whose global
bifurcations control orbital stability. As a result, "halo" orbits, floating
above or below the equatorial plane are possible. Explicit Lyapunov
stability boundaries will be given and predictions made for the upcoming
Cassini mission to Saturn.
