                                  ABSTRACT
                           


The Infrared Satellite ISO was capable of analysing the radiation of cosmic
sources with unprecidented sensitivity, spectral and spatial resolution in
new spectral windows up to wavelengths of 240 micrometers. The satellite
was cooled by 2300l of superfluid helium which lasted for 29 months and
allowed several thousand observations and extended surveys. The discoveries
range from the formation of planetary systems to luminous galaxies in the
early universe. The unique data archive is now open to astronomers worldwide.
