Applications are invited for a postdoctoral appointment in the division of
Astronomy at UCLA, to work with Dr. R. Michael Rich on photometry using
images from the Hubble Space Telescope. The principle aim of the program is
to determine the age of the globular cluster M4 using the white dwarf
cooling sequence (GO 8679). However, other research opportunities include
WFPC2 imaging of globular clusters in M31 (GO 6671), imaging of stellar
populations in the tidal tails of merging galaxies (GO 6669), and the
stellar population of the Galactic bulge (GO 5953). More information on

DAOPHOT/ALLFRAME and the analysis of WFPC2 or NICMOS data is essential.
Expertise in stellar populations and programming ability in IDL and FORTRAN
is also desirable.

It is anticipated that a one-year position can begin around 1 July 2000.
Renewal for a second or third year is possible, but subject to the
availability of funding. The position carries a salary of $39,000 annually,
with 50% time free for personal research. The successful applicant will
also be able to apply for time at Lick observatory and collaborate with the
PI at the Keck observatory. Applicants should have a Ph.D. by the start
