Dirk Helbing
(University of Stuttgart, Nemetorszag):
"The Wonderful World of Traffic"

Kivonatos ismertetes:

Thanks to advances in the fields of statistical physics and non-linear
dynamics, a number of astonishing discoveries has recently been made in
self-driven multi-particle systems. Prominent examples for such systems are
pedestrian and vehicle traffic, for which intensive research has revealed the
answers to many fascinating questions like the following: Why are vehicles
often stopped by so-called "phantom traffic jams", although they all like to
drive fast? What are the mechanisms behind stop-and-go traffic? Why are there
five different kinds of congestion, and how are they related? Why do most
traffic jams occur considerably before the road capacity is reached? Why can
a temporary reduction of the traffic volume cause a lasting traffic jam?
Under which conditions can speed limits speed up traffic? Why do pedestrians
moving in opposite directions organize in lanes? Why do self-organizing
systems tend to reach an optimal state? Why do panicking pedestrians produce
dangerous deadlocks? Why do human trails, i.e. shortcuts by pedestrians often
not correspond to direct ways? How can traffic streams be optimized? It is
obvious that the matter of traffic optimization is of enourmous practical
relevance for modern societies, and its technological potential amounts to
many billion dollars.
